The Zing of Ginger

Ah….a cup of lemon ginger tea. What a perfect way to end the day! I love the zing ginger adds to my tea and to my favorite recipes. Even more than that, I love the good health found in ginger essential oil. It’s simply an amazing oil with all kinds of uses and benefits.

Ginger is native to Asia. It was used for medicinal properties as long ago as in ancient China, as well as in Southeast Asia, India, and Japan. Ginger grows best in warm, tropical climates. The key property in Ginger is gingerol which is responsible for its aroma and medicinal properties, including its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Ginger essential oil is extracted from ginger rhizome (root section) after a distillation process. It is concentrated, so a little goes a long, long way and should be mixed with fractionated coconut oil for use on your skin. Ginger is considered a spice essential oil. Some people describe the aroma of ginger as spicy or warm. I just describe it as calming and wonderful.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health, John Hopkins Medicine, and others studied the health benefits of ginger and shared some need-to-know results. While it is important to note that additional research is needed on humans and with larger groups, there is some evidence that ginger*:

  • may help relieve mild nausea associated with pregnancy.

  • may play a role in weight loss and help lower cholesterol levels

  • may be helpful for menstrual cramps.

  • may help motion sickness.

  • may help individuals who experience indigestion.

  • may help to manage free radicals and boost immunity. Free radicals are compounds that can damage cells when in high numbers.

  • may have some anti-inflammatory properties

  • helps to smooth rough skin when blended into a cream.
