Yarrow - beauty in so many ways
If you’ve ever had the chance to grow yarrow, you know that it is just a marvelous and lovely plant. It grows a sturdy 4 feet high and weathers heavy downpours with ease. Its cluster of white, yellow, and light to deep pink flowers add brilliance and joy to any floral garden. And, best yet, it comes back every year to grace the growing season. It is a favorite of bees, and so just a wonderful flowering perennial to have in your garden.
Other terms for yarrow are bloodwort, carpenter's weed, devil's nettle, nosebleed, old man's pepper, staunchweed, thousand-leaf, and wound wort. Aren’t those fascinating names! Yarrow has 140 closely related varieties. And a caution here, if you are allergic to chrysanthemums, daisies, marigolds, and/or ragweed, stay far away from yarrow. As with these other plants, yarrow’s smell is definitely distinctive and some definitely are sensitive to its oil.
Yarrow has been part of herbal medicine since ancient times. Its uses include fever reduction, as a treatment for rashes, and as a way to cure stomach disorders. It also has been used across cultures and throughout time to stop infection and bleeding when applied to wounds. As with any herbal medicine, a caution. Be sure to consult your physician before using yarrow for physical ailments.

In our busy days, we so often dedicate our hours to the care of others. Whether it be our jobs outside of the home, of our very big job caring for our home and family, it just seems that time slips by and all too soon it’s the end of an exhausting day.
