Fun in the Sun…but WAIT!

Do you love the feel of sunshine on your face? I sure do, especially if the clouds have been around for a few days. There’s just nothing like closing your eyes and raising your face to catch some magnificent sun rays. There seems to be good reason for why we enjoy the sun beyond those feelings of absolute bliss with being outside on a sunny day.

Did you know, for example, that the sun triggers the production of vitamin D in the skin? This vitamin is essential for strong bones, a healthy immune system, and other important bodily functions. Sunlight can also boost mood by increasing the production of serotonin, a hormone that regulates mood, and reduces the production of melatonin, a hormone that makes us feel sleepy. Spending time in the sun can be a relaxing and enjoyable way to unwind and de-stress. Many people, like me, enjoy going to the beach, taking a walk in a park, or simply sitting outside in the sun to relax and enjoy the scenery.

But, care is important here. Just as the sun can bring a sense of harmony to our day, sun exposure over a length of time comes with the risk of skin cancer. Anyone can develop skin cancer, but certain factors can increase a person's risk of developing it. Here are some of the groups of people who are at the greatest risk of getting skin cancer:

  1. People with fair skin, light hair, and light eyes: People with fair skin have less melanin, which provides some natural protection against UV radiation.

  2. People who have a history of sunburns: A history of sunburns, especially during childhood, can increase the risk of skin cancer.

  3. People with a family history of skin cancer: If a person has a family history of skin cancer, they may be more likely to develop it themselves.

  4. People with a weakened immune system: People with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or those who have undergone an organ transplant, may be at an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

  5. People who have been exposed to arsenic: Arsenic exposure, which can occur through contaminated drinking water or certain jobs, can increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

  6. People who spend a lot of time outdoors, especially during peak sun hours, are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

  7. People who use indoor tanning beds: Indoor tanning beds emit UV radiation, which can increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

Perhaps of greatest concern is the amount of time children spend in the sun. Kids love to be outdoors, and it’s great for them to get all that healthy exercise enjoying outdoor activities. Yet, children are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of the sun's UV radiation because their skin is more delicate and sensitive than adult skin. Here are some steps parents and caregivers can take to protect children from too much sun exposure:

  1. Seek shade: When spending time outdoors with children, seek out shaded areas like under trees, umbrellas, or canopies. It's best to avoid being in direct sunlight, especially during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are the strongest.

  2. Dress for sun protection: Dress children in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and long pants. Choose clothing made from tightly woven fabrics that offer UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) protection. Wide-brimmed hats can also help protect their face, ears, and neck.

  3. Apply sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on all exposed skin, even on cloudy days. Apply the sunscreen at least 15-30 minutes before going outside and reapply it every 2 hours or more frequently if swimming or sweating. For children under 6 months, it is best to keep them out of direct sunlight altogether and to use protective clothing.

  4. Use sunglasses: Sunglasses with UV protection can help protect your child's eyes from the sun's harmful rays.

  5. Be a good role model: Children learn by example, so it's important for parents and caregivers to set a good example by following sun protection practices themselves.
