Empathetic Leadership

A leader who practices empathy not only understands the feelings and perspectives of their team members but also actively seeks to support and uplift them. By demonstrating compassion and emotional intelligence, empathetic leaders foster a sense of trust, respect, and psychological safety within their teams.

When team members feel heard and valued, they are more likely to be engaged and productive. Empathetic leaders create an inclusive and supportive culture where individuals feel comfortable expressing themselves and sharing their concerns without fear of judgment.

Questions to Ask Myself on How I Can Become More Empathetic

1. Am I actively listening?

  • Am I truly focusing on what the other person is saying, or am I waiting for my chance to speak?

  • Am I making an effort to understand their perspective without judgment or interruption?

2. Am I open-minded?

  • Do I approach conversations with a willingness to consider viewpoints different from my own?

  • Am I quick to dismiss or invalidate someone else's feelings or experiences?

3. Do I practice perspective-taking?

  • Am I putting myself in the other person's shoes to understand how they might be feeling?

  • Do I consider their background, experiences, and emotions before reacting or offering advice?

4. Am I aware of non-verbal cues?

  • Am I attentive to the other person's body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions?

  • Am I using their non-verbal cues to understand their emotions and thoughts?

5. Am I curious about others?

  • Do I ask genuine and open-ended questions to learn more about someone's experiences and feelings?

  • Am I showing interest in what matters to them without making assumptions?

6. Do I validate others' emotions?

  • Am I acknowledging and accepting the other person's feelings as valid, even if I don't agree with their perspective?

  • Am I offering support and understanding without trying to "fix" the situation immediately?

7. Am I self-aware?

  • Do I recognize my own emotional reactions and biases in interactions with others?

  • Am I actively working to manage my own emotions to better connect with and support those around me?

8. Am I practicing kindness and compassion?

  • Am I choosing kindness in my interactions, even when I may not fully understand or relate to the other person's emotions?

  • Am I showing empathy through small acts of understanding and support?

9. Do I seek feedback?

Collaboration

Collaboration ~

Establishing clear channels of communication is fundamental. We encourage team members to openly express their ideas, share feedback, and ask questions.
Remaining open to new ideas and being adaptable to change are essential for successful collaboration.

Ownership ….Dependability….Trust….Structure….Shared Vision….Fun….Candor

Collaboration is a group of post-a-notes!

When collaborating, all ideas have value. All ideas are written down or placed on post-a-notes for consideration later. Even the most “off the wall” ideas go up on the wall as ideas are generated. In your head you may think, “Okay, that’s never going to work,” but don’t say it! The only way for individuals to take ownership of a project and trust everyone who is part of the project is to allow ideas to freely flow.

Who should do what?

The great thing about teams is the diversity of talent held within that team. When collaborating on a project, everyone should chose a task they enjoy doing. Not everyone needs to be doing the same thing. Showcase talents! Have fun!

Your Turn

Work with two or more individuals to manage a project. This could be designing a doTERRA Essential Oils presentation and enrollment event , or working with your family to paint and rearrange a room, or planning a community event, or whatever might seem like a fun project to do. Then start collaborating! Follow these steps:

  1. Work with others to choose a project.

  2. Define the project. What is the end goal? Write that down.

  3. Start writing ideas on post-a-notes on how to manage the project, from materials to the space to needed steps required to anything else individuals think of. Write every idea on a post-a note. This process is called brainstorming!

  4. Organize your post-a-notes. Then start to evaluate the ideas. Keep your comments positive. “I like this idea because….” or “This idea may require additional cost.”

  5. Keep ideas that everyone agrees should work best. Then divide up tasks, determine a timeline, and begin!

  6. Your ideas may need to be re-evaluated. That’s just fine. Sometimes what seemed like a perfectly perfect idea turns out to be flawed. Perhaps the venue you chose is not available for a presentation or the color you decided to paint a room is really awful. Realize that failure is okay. As a group re-evaluate and start again.
